Ulverston Angling Association: Open Day at Knottalow Tarn 14th June 2008
The event was well attend and kicked off at 10 am.
Entomology: Study of insects
Dave Helm and Tony Riley set about looking for aquatic insects by looking under
the stones from the tarn bottom. One of the first insects was a Dragonfly Nymph
which Dave Helm bravely held whilst it was photographed (they can give a nasty bite!).
Dave then used an insect net to collect insects from the tarn firstly demonstrating
the massive amounts of Corixa (Water Boatmen) which lie under the surface.
Following this a closer look at the sticklebacks, corixa, caddis fly cases and damsel
nymphs and their imitations.
Float Tubing Instruction and Demonstration
Then Dave Anderson explained the equipment needed for float tubing followed by a
demo from Tony Canipa out on the tarn
Fly Casting Demonstration and Instruction by Tony Riley
Tony Riley then gave an insightful look into the art of flycasting. Tony is an AAPGAI
acredited Instructor and is available for Guiding and Fly Casting Instruction and
can be contacted on 079161 70546. The sign of quality for an AAPGAI Master is that
he can mentor others to achieve the same.
